A high calibre fleet of British Moths gathered at Northampton Sailing Club for a two day event to contest the 9th and 10th rounds of the Somerville Series. Competitors came from as far apart as Norfolk and Gloucestershire (Rollesby and Frampton-on-Severn S.C. respectively) to compete at this popular venue.

Saturday 12th July - "The Moth Ball"

Saturday's racing began in a good breeze and Tim Davison set the pattern for the day by gaining a comfortable lead at the windward mark, which he held to the finish. Second place was hotly contested by Roger Witts and Graham Pope, with the latter edging home ahead of Roger in a final tacking duel to the finish line. The rest of the fleet enjoyed some close racing with Mark Wiltshire overhauling Jeremy Higson to finish 4th.

Races 2 and 3 were sailed back to back in a strengthening wind and in the first of these the same three were at the front again, with Tim Davison again taking the win just ahead of Roger Witts. Graham Pope was some way back and managed to hold off Andrew Perrott who was steadily improving throughout the day. In the 3rd race yet again it was Davison showing complete mastery of the conditions ahead of Witts in 2nd. This time the margin was even closer with a couple of seconds separating the two leading boats as Davison covered Witts's every move. Perrott recorded his best result of the day with a 3rd ahead of Wiltshire with Pope dropping back to 5th.

Sunday 13th July - Day Two

Sunday dawned sunny with a light wind for the second event and two "back to back" races were scheduled for the morning. The 1st race got away and it was new arrival Colin Hall who promptly demonstrated his light wind technique by establishing a lead, closely pursued by Tim Davison and Roger Witts. Hall covered Davison and Witts who were unable to break through and held on to win by a narrow margin. With Wiltshire in 4th and Laura Honey in 5th the Gloucestershire based club were well represented in the top half of the fleet.

Northampton Open 2008Race two began with a light breeze which died rapidly halfway up the first beat; Hall got to the front with Davison and Witts closely following. These 3 broke well clear of the rest of the fleet. Again the finish was very close with Hall just holding off the Davison and Witts with less than 10 seconds covering the first three boats. Meanwhile the pack behind bunched at the leeward mark leaving a dash to the line. First to break from the pack was Barry Graver who finished 4th with Elaine Gillingham behind to earn a well deserved 5th place. Fellow lightweight Gary Tompkins also benefited in the rush for the line, finishing 6th.

Lunch was then taken and with the wind extremely light and shifty the third race was abandoned, leaving Colin Hall the winner on the day.
