by Laura Honey, Frampton SC Strong winds and showers greeted the 32 Moths on their return to Hunts SC, St Ives, Cambridgeshire for their 76th National Championships. ![]() Following the devastation of the practice race, won by Ian Hanson followed by the 2 Frampton boats of Bill Gribble and Jeremy Higson, only half of the fleet ventured out for the Teddy Hicks Trophy. In increasing winds now at force 4-5 with regular gusts of force 6, first to show were Tim Davison (Medley) and Colin Hall from the home club, in what was to become four days of close racing between the two former Champions. ![]() Hall finally succumbed to the conditions in a series of capsizes only to continue and miss a mark. Davison won easily from Keith Bond, followed by Steve Seargeant (King George SC). Early challenger at the head of the fleet Barry Pleasants (Broxbourne) faded to take 6th. Hall gained revenge the next day in the Coup de Leon Trophy after a race long tussle with Davison, with an ‘out of sorts’ Roger Witts taking a third in his first outing. ![]() Race 3 for the Marlow Rope Salver saw Davison and Hall locked in combat again. This time Tina Hardyment, clearly enjoying the lighter conditions that were now a force 2-3, was close behind taking a creditable third, with Andrew Perrott fourth and Roger Witts, still not fully on the pace, in fifth. Tim Davison covered Colin Hall relentlessly through the second half of the race to take the win. Friday dawned to bright sun and a gradually increasing force 3 wind. The conditions tempted the whole fleet out for the first time, which included three juniors all being 13 or under. Perrott, after a first race retirement, continued to progress, scoring a fifth in the Amethyst Trophy with Bond just ahead. The Davison/ Hall battle ensued at the front but this time Witts joined them in the final stages. Hall won, Davison second with Witts tucked in behind. Tim Lupton headed the juniors with a 24th, with Frampton juniors Georgia Honey and Ben Gribble in 25th and 32nd respectively. ![]() The fifth race for the Thompson Trophy was very eventful. After a disastrous start Davison clawed his way through the fleet and by the end of lap three was up with Hall, the early race leader. With Hall and Davison locked in a covering duel Witts and Hanson passed to contest the lead. Witts held on to win from Hanson with Bond in third followed by Davison and Hall. Best of the Ladies thus far, Tina Hardyment scored a tenth in this race with Laura Honey in sixth and Abby Freeley scoring her best result with a twelfth. The final race for the Solent Trophy was to be the decider. The lead again was contested by Davison and Hall but now joined by a back on form Witts. Perrott, Bond, Honey, Mark Wiltshire (Frampton), Hanson and Ian Edwards (Evesham) were in the second grouping at the windward mark. ![]() Perrott capsized at the gybe mark; he recovered to finish eighth but his capsize cost him a position in the final standings. On the final leg, Witts split the leaders momentarily but Davison took the gun with Hall second, Witts third, Bond fourth, and Wiltshire finishing fifth, his best of the championships, just ahead of Ian Hanson. The close of play saw Tim Davison as a worthy National Champion, counting an impressive 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 score sheet. ![]() Overall 1st Tim Davison - "Proper Job" 846, Medley 2nd Colin Hall - "Okhams Razor" 856, Hunts 3rd Roger Witts - "Scruff" 871, Frampton 4th Keith Bond - "Oak Beauty" 756, Upton Warren 5th Ian Hanson - "70+" 844, Rollesby 6th Andrew Perrott - "Dark Dagger" 796, Chippenham Ladies 1st Tina Hardyment - "Gypsy" 852, Medley 2nd Laura Honey - "Tabitha Twitchit" 700, Frampton 3rd Abby Freeley - 864, St Edmundsbury Veteran 1st David Cannon - "Thera" 830, Medley 2nd Barry Graver - "Fly-bi-nite" 850, Rollesby 3rd Ian Haywood - "Whynot" 815, Frampton Juniors 1st Tim Lupton - "Lappet" 783, St Edmundsbury 2nd Georgia Honey - "Nutmeg" 827, Frampton 3rd Ben Gribble - "ONONO" 779, Frampton Photography Valued contributions from Ben Gribble, Georgia Honey & Paul Jefferies and special thanks to Mike Shaw of www.fotoboat.com |
