Frampton Open - 17th May 2008
The "Suspense Trophy"

by Roger Wits, Frampton-on-Severn SC
Frampton hosted the 3rd Somerville Trophy Event in the British Moth 2008 Calendar in light and at times tricky conditions. Attended by 18 Boats from as far as Rollesby in Norfolk and St Edmundsbury in Suffolk the event was the first half of a weekend double header that saw British Moths put on a great show of good, competitive and very close racing at both events.

18 Boats attending
Race Officer Andy Tully set  interesting courses with the wind unusually coming in from the North East for the first two races that were held “back to back”.

Andrew Parker-Mowbray in Thing One 818 led from the start and was never headed. Behind, David Taylor in 859 (now re-named as Jubilate) showed good off-wind speed and came through to finish ahead of Roger Witts sailing a borrowed Panic 839 with the new P&B development sail, Graham Pope in Gromit 828 and Laura Honey in Tabitha Twitchit 700. However biggest cheer was given to Georgia Honey (aged 12) in ONONO 779 when she passed Tony Jacks-Evesham and Dave Badminton from the home club on the last lap to finish ahead of them both!

Georgia Honey, ONONO 779The 2nd race saw Graham Pope from the home club head the pack with strong challenges coming from much improved Mark Willtshire in Painted Lady 817, Parker-Mowbray and Laura Honey. Witts and Taylor were relegated to 5th and 6th respectively as they struggled for clear air.

Apart from Taylor the visitors were not featuring in the results so far with Ian Hanson from Rollesby in 70+ 844 and Gary Tompkins of SESCA in Betcha 799, Ian checking in with a 9th and 8th and Gary with a 7th and 10th.

A trio of mothsAfter a break and a course change it was Witts who was getting to grips with that new sail and took the lead and held on to get the win. Behind him, Parker-Mowbray managed to secure 2nd place and the overall win with Pope 3rd and Taylor 4th. Hanson improved with a 5th and Tompkins now in a leaking Boat taking 6th place. Betcha was repaired through that evening in readiness for the Whitefriars Open the next day.

The event was sponsored by IMPCROSS Ltd.

Race Management was by Tony Williams and the Frampton Topper Fleet.

The British Moths are to return to Tropical Frampton in October for the final event in the Somerville Trophy.
