RACING RESULTS

Fowey - 28th & 29th June 2008
The "Salty Weekend"

by Roger Witts, Frampton SC
Practice Friday 27th June

Location: Mixstow, Fowey.

Several warm-up mini-races in the tricky conditions saw race wins for most of the 4 who ventured out.

Overall Roger Witts in "ONONO" had the edge in the conditions over Andrew Parker-Mowbray "Thing One", with Mark Wiltshire in "Painted Lady" improving in the fluky/gusty conditions throughout the session.

Bill Gribble in "Atlantic Bonus" found the conditions not to his liking but also improved and finally mastered the tide flow.

"Cornish British Moth Championships" Saturday 28th June

Location: Fowey.

Bright sun and a force 3-4 greeted the 5 entrants, who were joined by a Mirror "Redwing" sailed by Georgia Honey & Ben Gribble and Mandy Collings in a Topper for a series of races held close to the spectators and tourists on Fowey's quays.

OOD and "Honorary Mothist" John Burford set excellent short courses (ably assisted by "Jim-Bob" P-M) in the short chop that built through the event.

Race 1, as all the races, was closely contested between Laura Honey "Tabitha Twichtit" and Mark Wiltshire with Mark finally taking the gun.

Race 2 was memorable as Bill Gribble rammed the Committee Boat in fine style (he is being released from custody at the weekend!) In the race Laura continued where she left off in Race 1 and was quick upwind and reveling in the conditions, powering through early leaders Andrew P-M and Roger Witts on the second beat to win easily. Andrew finished 2nd with Roger 3rd.

Race 3 saw Andrew gain revenge at the final mark to pass Mark Wiltshire and Laura to take the win.

The final race was won convincingly by Laura Honey in fine style & showing speed on all points as the wind freshened that could not be matched by anyone else. Andrew was tucked in behind to finish 2nd in the race and take 2nd overall in the event with a 3, 2, 1 & 2.

Mark Wiltshire using the all-carbon rig finished 3rd overall with 1, 4, 2 & 5 placings.

Laura Honey deservedly won the event and the "Cornish Champion 2008" title with a 2, 1, 3, 1 scorecard.

1st - Laura Honey, 700 "Tabitha Twichtit" (Frampton-on-Severn S.C.)

2nd - Andrew Parker-Mowbray, 818 "Thing One" (Frampton-on-Severn S.C.)

3rd - Mark Wiltshire, 817 "Painted Lady" (Frampton-on-Severn S.C.)

Fowey Gallants S.C. Slow H-Cap Race Saturday 28th June

Location: Fowey.

Invited to join in with Fowey Gallants S.C. Series Races after lunch, four of the Frampton Moths ventured out amidst the Troy Boats in the now steady Force 4 and increasing chop & swell; very un-Moth like!

The spectacle of the fantastic Fowey Troy Boats of course complemented by the British Moths drew a good crowd on the Town Quay.

Andrew and Mark made the start on the Fowey side with Roger Witts now in "Tabitha Twitchtit" (as the new "Cornish Champion" sat this one out) started some way down the line heading for Polruan! For 4 laps Andrew and Mark swapped places with Roger slowly closing but on the final lap and leg, realizing that it was a 4 lapper, Roger headed for the line to take the race and his one and only win of the day.

The excellent hospitality laid on by Fowey Gallants and OOD par-excellence John Burford continued into the evening with a Bar-B-Que and mature Beer and Cider sampling. Unfortunately, Committee Boat Rammer "Wild Bill" Gribble enjoyed the Cornish hospitality rather too much and on the walk back to "Camp Frampton" disappeared into a hedge head-first for a short while to the dismay of some rather startled sheep and the general amusement of all!

Golant Pasty Challenge Sunday 29th June

Location: Golant, Fowey

For the final day racing moved upstream to Golant.

Bright sunshine with shifty and often gusty conditions coupled with a strong tide made progress interesting.

A fantastic place for Moth sailing saw Laura Honey take the first race continuing where she left off the day before.

She led for the whole race but was caught by Andrew at the final mark as she was becalmed and there ensued an epic battle to the line where Laura managed to beat Andrew by a whisker. Including this win, the new "Cornish Champ" ended up with a 1, 4, 5, 4 & 1.

Clearly liking the trickier conditions Andrew won races 2, 4 and 5 to win the "River Series", ending up with a 2, 1, 2, 1 & 1 tally.

Bill (keeping well clear of the Committee Boat!) had his first race win in Race 3 to the cheers of the gathering on the Committee Boat.

Mark again sailed well to finish up 2nd overall with a 3, 2, 3, 3, 1 as his best results.

Finally getting "ONONO" to move, Roger finished 3rd with 3, 3, 2, 2, 2 after getting caught on a buoy for some time in the strong tide to the jeers and cheers from everyone.

All over apart from the prizegiving back at Gallants, and again Cornish hospitality excelled with a John Burford inspired collection of prizes for all the Frampton Mothists, ranging from an inscribed "Bow Bumper" for Bill to "The Pasty" for Laura.

Remarkably we have been invited back, and how can we resist ???
