Nationals – Final Day

BRITISH MOTH NATIONALS – DAY4 –STAUNTON HAROLD SC

With the competitors recovering from their annual dinner they woke up to calmer conditions than the previous day.  The national champion had already been decided but there was still an air of anticipation as personal pride was still at stake.

As the competitors headed out to the start line for the final race they were expecting a long course and the race officer did not let them down.  With Robbie Claridge now out of contention due to a broken mast the previous day it was left with the Roger Witts to lead the way to the first mark closely followed by Toby Cooper.  As they steadily pulled away the rest of the fleet converged en-masse.

In the fluky conditions Toby Cooper managed to get passed Roger Witts by the end of the first lap who led over Tim Davison.

By the last lap the leaders had left the fleet behind and the first three finishers were Toby Cooper , Tim Davison and Roger Witts.

The National Champion for 2013 was confirmed as Toby Cooper who had been Champion 13 previous times between 1984 and 1992.

Lady’s Champion was Abby Freely and Veteran Trophy went to Tim Davison.

Many thanks to all the members of Staunton Harold Sailing Club for their professionalism, and friendship they offered the visitors.  Special thanks goes to Alan Bennett (PRO) and Rachel Rhodes (AOD);  Mike Jones and his young crew for Rescue; Galley: – Dianne and Nigel Pepperdine, Lesley Fosket, Marie Jones, Pat Newton and Lawrence Haywood.

The event attracted 29 entries from 15 Clubs and there were 2 brand new boats on the water.
