First River Open of 2013 at Medley

A good breeze and a good turnout welcomed competitors for the Medley Moth Bowl.

Thirteen times national champion Toby Cooper shot into the lead in the first race in his beautifully prepared When, but the boat was too fast and took the wrong course. This allowed Tim Davison to take the gun, with Cooper recovering to second and Ian Miller third. Having learned his way round the course, Cooper made no further mistakes and took two bullets in the next two races. Tim Davison and Andy Matthews were consistently second and third. So the Moth Bowl was Cooper’s with Davison the bridesmaid and Matthews, a newcomer who is  already showing good form, third.

The Bossom’s Cup is a one race, sudden death challenge. By now the wind was developing some serious holes, and there were numerous place changes.  Gary Tompkins and Tim Davison diced for much of the race but the best fun was at the finish. Davison led into the flat patch around the final mark but stopped on the buoy, allowing Tomkins and Ian Miller past. Tomkins ran out of wind with a length to go and Miller was caught the wrong side of  a shift, allowing Davison to take the gun with Millar second.Tomkins eventually got a puff to finish third.

At the prize giving an embarrassing amount of champagne was distributed to the winners, and the ladies were praised for their excellent breakfast, lunch and tea (all included in the fee). Be there next year!
