Cam Sailing Club British Moth Open – 13 Oct 2012

The Cam sailing Club Moth Open took place on the 13th October having been postponed from the original date due the river being in flood. No such problems this time but a lack of wind was a worry early on. However some wind came up and nine Moths were to be seen in their natural habitat, on a river in light airs.

With nine boats on a restricted river a flight system was used with two starts for each of the 3 races and this ensured everyone sailed everyone else at least once. In the first start of the first race Jeff Haggerty crept away with Abby Freely taking the win in the second start.

The second race saw a win for Moth returnee Andy Mathews. It is in the order of 25 years since Andy raced moths and the blighter doesn’t look a day older! But really good to see him again and especially in a Moth.  In the other start Abby secured her second win of the day.

For the third race the light wind continued but went a bit to the north so the mark that had been moved to ensure the racers avoid the lee of some big trees at the end of the course was now right in that very shadow. This is some way made up for the lack of tacking by providing some excitement with regard to changing of positions. Although excitement was not the word being used by most!

Abbey could only get a third this time Colin Hall taking the first whilst Andy got his second win in the other start.  With two races to count out of the three discards and the races where they met were needed to sort out the final order.
