British Moth Open at Desborough SC – 8 Sep 2012

Report by R. Broughton.

Five local boats were joined by six visitors from four different clubs when Desborough SC held their 64th Annual Open Meeting in this the 80th year of the British Moth. Competitors were greeted with warm sunshine and only the lightest fluky breeze for the first race.

Local helms Mike Barrett and Richard Broughton got away at the start by hugging the right hand bank upstream and it was not long before the visitors realised this was the place to be. The early leaders were caught by the entire fleet at the downstream mark and Rob Wilder emerged from the melee to take the lead pursued by Colin Hall, Simon Hall and Broughton. At the end of lap 2 Colin Hall had taken the lead which he held to win the race with Wilder second and Broughton who passed Simon Hall on the last leg, third.

In Race 2 there was a little more breeze and Broughton again got away well and lead for the first lap before being overhauled by Wilder who then kept ahead to win the race comfortably with Broughton second and Colin Hall third.

Race 3 followed a similar pattern with Broughton getting a good start and this time he kept in front to finish first while Wilder who was second and Colin Hall third had to contend some interference from the busy traffic on the river.
